Gino Vannelli announced he was going to teach a master class called the Art of Vocal. I submitted all requested materials to his brother, Ross, who was taking care of the selections, and I got the call. Cool! I was one of 5 singers chosen to be a part of this 5 day class in Gino's private studio in Troutdale, Ore. I was so excited. What would he be like? Would he like me? Would he be cool and chill? I was nervous, but in a performance kind of way, which if you've ever been on stage, you'll know what I mean. It turns out, Gino is a true gentleman. I real guy with warmth, uber talent and patience. We spent the next 5 days working on our song of choice, with frickin Gino Vannelli at the console and wearing the producer hat, better than anybody I had ever seen. He was the bomb! The song, "The Very Thought of You" which I posted on this site is the product of that week in his studio, and I couldn't be more proud of it. It might be some of my personal best work ever. I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recording it. Thanks, Gino!
We recently recorded 3 songs in a great studio in Belmont, Ca. OTR is real. Two inch tape, no pro tools, no pitch correction, etc. I felt clean as I was laying down vocal tracks. The trio was ON and I loved the energy. I'm not here to knock new technology, nor do I want to bring negative vibes to any recording, but I have to say, the idea of recording raw sound became very comfortable. I forgot to think about post editing. I began to trust my abilities and relax. "Letting go" let everyone focus on the task at hand, and the task at hand became fun, creative and pure. Music is and should always be about sound. Anything else seems to be noise.
My first attempt at blogging. Any suggestions?
