THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS.

3... 2... 1...

Here we are, almost at the end of another year. For me, there have been many good things during this past year, particularly with my music. Many more gig opportunities have presented themselves. I've had more exposure, and am gaining a reputation. Songwriting has once again reared its head, and (as a result), I've been working on an EP (hopefully out by the end of January). On a more personal note, my circle of friends has widened - some very good friends :-)

There have been, on a much grander scale, some horrible things happen during 2012, things we would all much rather leave behind us. Many broken lives and hearts... During 2013, let us all make it a point to counter some of these things. Not with legislation, not with retaliation... but with acts of love and kindness. It all starts there - or should I say, "HERE"? with ME. I'm going to try and make it my goal to do acts of love, of kindness - to try and go out of my way. Join me?

Peace.

"THEN IN DESPAIR I BOWED MY HEAD..."

We have just faced a terrible tragedy - and this all happened just 38 miles from where I live. Some weep, while others rail and point fingers, in our struggle to make sense of what happened. I have no answers - don't even come close to it. As I posted on Facebook, "I cannot undo the pain and suffering that someone has caused, but I CAN DO." I can reach out and hug a friend or loved one. I can speak a kind word. I can do something as simple as smile to those around me. I cannot undo, but perhaps in my doing, I can preempt, prevent, cause someone's day to be a little nicer.

When I was around ten years old, I learned and memorized Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day". I have always loved it, and still remember it well. It is only recently that I went back and looked up the background to the poem. Not long after his wife's tragic death (house fire), he received a letter informing him that his son had been severely wounded (serving in the Union Army). Longfellow had done all he could to try to keep his son from even joining the army. His wife had died, now his son lie severely wounded. His poem contrasts the struggle between these events and approaching Christmas season - the season of "Peace on Earth, goodwill t'ward men.".

About ten years ago, I wrote a choral version of it. For some unexplainable reason, out of the blue, I wrote another melody for it about three weeks ago. While working on my forthcoming EP, I decided to record, "I Heard the Bells". I do not expect this song to change, or "fix" things. However, I do hope it will encourage each of us to do what we can to spread peace & goodwill.

For a short time, it is available as free download at www.rcfullerton.com
