SoulMission / Blog

I blogged a few months ago about the phoenix. Well, like the phoenix, it seems that SoulMission is making a sort-of transformation as well. While in the middle of our recording project, our drummer decided to step down and pursue a different style of music. At first, I wondered if this would hurt the recording, and maybe even the band. But God works all things out to His good, and I know the changes will make for a better recording, and a stronger band. I have the flexibility to make changes to some of the songs, now, which I didn't before. It's like a blank canvas... the ideas are there, but the masterpiece hasn't been created yet. With the help of guest musicians (good friend Bryan Price of Eyesalve and Andy Quinn), the record is already starting to blossom and change in ways that go far beyond my expectations. So, SoulMission is in a major transition right now, but trust me when I say, all the new changes will be for the better.

Keeping the Past... Exactly That.

Why do we get so hung up on our past? Whether it's our mistakes, people that are no longer part of our lives, or situations that may happen that we have no control over, we obsess to the point that it begins to affect us physically. The stress of the past causes headaches, poor appetite and keeps us up late at night with worry.

But why do we let it get to us to the point that it starts to affect our everyday life? The beauty of having a relationship with Christ means that He doesn't dwell on our past. He sees us for our potential, for what God created us to be. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus! That means, to Him, our past is, well, already past. We have a future and a hope.

Just keep in mind, that it's possible that the things that have happened in our past can shape us, but our past doesn't have to define who we are. Take heart my friends!

The Phoenix Rising

It seems that so many times in our lives, even when some good things are happening, we can't help but look around and see some of the pieces of our lives that are starting to look like remnants of what they once were. Our jobs, our relationships with others, often scarred and burned. Many times, these aspects of our lives are so charred that they become almost unrecognizable as the things they once were, only cinders and ashes remaining.

I am reminded of 2 Corinthians, where Paul says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, all things have become new again." So often we think our lives are in shambles, and many times that is true. But we are new creations in Christ Jesus, like the mythical creature the phoenix, burned and destroyed, it is reborn out of the ashes, rising up out of the flames. This is what our God does for us. When things fall apart, no matter how bad they become, we can call on Jesus to not only fix things, but He will make ALL THINGS NEW. How awesome is it to have a God like that in our corner?!!!

Ramping Up

Um, wow... sometimes there just aren't words to express all of the emotions you feel when God shows up in a huge way. In my last blog entry, I mentioned some of the things that are on the horizon. Since then, we have moved to #2 on the Christian Rock charts in Pittsburgh. How huge is that? Today, my longtime friend let me borrow one of his favorite guitars, an ESP EC-401VF flametop. Not only is this incredibly awesome, but it will make such a difference when we hit the studio in a few weeks! So, a huge shout out to my friend Eyesalve for the blessing and his continued encouragement! If you are unfamiliar with his music, check him out at EyesalveOnline.com , He has a sound unlike anything you've heard, and is honestly one of the best musicians I've ever met. God's many blessings are abundant my friends! Talk to you soon!

Wow, some amazing things are happening in 2013 in just a few short weeks! Our ReverbNation local rank for Christian bands has gone from #26 to #3. We are teaming up with Refuge Studio in Bellevue in just a few short weeks to record our new EP, "Ignite." Also, we are working on finalizing a few show dates for early spring, so we will hopefully be seeing you soon! God is putting this all in motion, so we're going to be faithful and see if we can ride this juggernaut as long as possible!
