Old Vern / Blog

So much has happened since last we spoke! Where to begin...

Our album "Here on Purpose" was finally completed; 104 copies of a fancy mass-produced version (with artwork and everything!) arrived on the doorstep of Vern Manor at 3:07 p.m. on May 25th. We fulfilled our dream of playing Valley City's Labor Club the very next evening, and sold a whopping one (one!) copy of our album at said show. The afternoon following Labor Club consisted of traveling to St. Paul for our Twin Cities debut, which did not result in its intended impact due to miscommunication among multiple booking agents. Long story. Let's not go there.

June 2nd saw our fourth (count 'em! four!) battle of the bands victory in less than a year, this particular one being held at Popplers Music in Grand Forks. We don't really enjoy playing battles of bands, but since we keep winning, it's easy money! (Wait, that sounded kinda cocky. It wasn't supposed to.) Our next gig is, you guessed it, a battle of the bands at the Grand Forks Fair on June 27th. We won this shindig last year and hope to do even better this time around.

We also made our radio debut a few weeks back with "Reflected Clarity," a tune written and sang by bassist Jeff "Diamond" Durow. Two weeks later, another song of ours called "Waiting (Say It All Again)" was heard on the airwaves. Muchas gracias to Pioneer 90.1 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. 'Twas a dream come true!

Oh, one more thing: we're currently ranked #11 in the Minneapolis region in the Ernie Ball/Warped Tour Battle of the Bands. If you haven't voted yet, please do so @ http://warped.battleofthebands.com/u/OLDVERN. For those who HAVE been voting: we adore you!

Warped Tour seemed like a pipe dream when we first got on board; at the rate things have been progressing lately, it's beginning to seem like a real possibility...

In a foolish attempt to improve upon perfection, we asked our producer to bring up the drums on the album. And why not? After all, we have the best drummer in the entire Midwest (if not Planet Earth). Of course, this has thrown off the entire mix. It seems we are nearly back at square one, at least with the rendering of what we’ve already laid down. This would have been acceptable had it happened weeks ago, but we have a stern deadline to get the finished tracks to mix-master James by Friday.

So… a final trip to Grand Forks tomorrow to finish up vocals, tweak the mix, and hopefully (HOPEFULLY!!!) leave Whisky Sam studios Wednesday evening with a finished product. Next week will mark six months since we began this project; even “Chinese Democracy” didn’t take this long…

A blessed event occurred yesterday when we welcomed a new member into our family. Big Jeff purchased a 1990 Econoline; it's maroon in color and has a high ceiling which will allow it to accompany many disco-dancing parties.

Old Vern, you shall never be replaced. But we need to get to the gigs somehow...
