SkyShaper / Blog

Friday at the Telegraph

This was the last ever night of "Order 66", a regular showcase at the Telegraph by Mallaz (promoter) who is now moving on to other projects, e.g. at the legendary "Head of Steam". We turned out with 3 other acts in SkyShaper's first gig. Awkward Weed kicked off at 8.15 with a half hour set of comedy and music, greatly enjoyed by the pair's followers, followed by SkyShaper at 8.45.

We played a short set, shortened further to 7 songs as it looked like we would over-run, but we tried to keep them short and sweet 'cos we do sometimes stretch 'em out a bit! The audience, though limited to about 25 strong were great; I'm sure they liked us as we got a very warm reception and the size of the bar means you can't get a great number in anyway, our last song, Melanie's Energize got plenty of applause but we had to wrap it up then to allow the other turns to have their go.

Now, Voyager came on after us, playing an interesting, original set very reminiscent of Siouxsie and the Banshees but brought up to date with sound and pace, I would pay to see them no problem.

Unfortunately we had to leave after the headliner, B-Type's set had just started, work commitments etc etc but his first song sounded great: rap over a synth background, and the rap was rhythmic and passionate - wish we could have stayed longer. If this was typical of Order 66 events I can't understand the low turnout - some cracking music was played, and enjoyed by the audience. Here's to more SkyShaper gigs, I really enjoyed this one.

first gig nerves

Actually, even though it is our first gig as SkyShaper tonight (at The Telegraph in Newcastle, Fri 3rd August today) I don't feel particularly nervous, I'm sure I will closer to the time. We have been working hard rehearsing and at mixing songs for an album which is close to completion now, but I want to do some more recordings, using Adrian our relatively new and well talented bass player, and maybe do some instrumental stuff - we've played a couple of improvised jams between songs at practices and I for one think we should record some. Anyways, gig tonight, hope I'm ready, wish us luck!!
