Record #2...? LA or Nashville...?
I ponder this thought often. How much of life is actually determined by a name? Are we puzzle pieces that fit into a specific mold because our name allows it? Would people respond the same way if my name or the band’s name were something else?
To me, the band name has always been a means to allow you all, "the mass populous", to locate a specific movement/ emotion that our music emits. We Were Astronauts are three words that have formulated an invisible pact between four people, to put out the most personal and true music we could have ever hoped to produce. It embodies the most essential qualities and ideals of what it means to follow ones dreams.
People always ask, "Where did your name come from"....in my head I often say what does it matter, it's just a title.....it's the music that matters right? : ). But then I realized as I am sure you all have as well, humans are curious. We are always looking for a bit of a nudge in the right direction. A way of relating to a word or phrase can give us such satisfaction and clarity. But at the same time, I have come to realize that this in and of itself is an art. The ability to give enough to something to make it meaningful....yet at the same time leave it vague enough that it can be reached by so many and mean something different to each and every one is king.
What I am about to tell you, I have been told time and time again is not the way to go and usually sounds something like this. "Oh No, I mean that’s cute and all....but come up with a better story". We Were Astronauts to me has always embodied the dreams of a young boy. Many kids growing up looked up to the sky in hopes that one day we would be able to touch the stars and leave a lasting impression on humanity. Our generation saw the last of those hopes and dreams when NASA concluded the shuttle program and in turn ended the astronaut program. A heritage gone! No longer is it symbolic of the American people to embody the entire human population in terms of space travel. So what the hell! "We Were Astronauts" sounded damn good at the time! But like a bad movie I will close this out with one last statement. In all reality it just sounded really indie!
