Ivory Heroes @ Fluid Bar

Armed with their instruments, each other, and a whole load of talent, Ivory Heroes were well and truly ready to play their first set of 2011, last Thursday.

I was fortunate enough to be present at the bands first open mic gig of the year at Barbicans Fluid Bar. Whilst the venue was more of a casual spot where you’re more likely to meet up with friends after work, rather than for the acts, Ivory Heroes managed to pull all eyes on to them.

The band consists of Elijah John on vocals, Henry Harrison on guitar, Vicky Osterberg on the cajon, and Nicole Serrano supporting on vocals. The band got the crowd warmed up with a cover of Been Around the World by Lisa Stansfield, and Summertime by Indigo Girls. Together, the mix of Nicole’s husky voice, and the enthusiasm and energy that Elijah John brings in, made them both beautiful and unique covers.

The highlight was when they stole and ended the show with one of their own songs, Like I Love You, written by their very own guitarist, Henry Harrison. It was obviously a favourite with many, as the crowd danced and sang along. The heartache and the power that can be felt in the lyrics of the songs drew me and many others in, and I was left feeling only what can be described as tenderhearted and sympathetic, a strange feeling to feel from such an upbeat song.

Catch Ivory Heroes again at Cafe Reload on 11th February, and support them on Facebook here. If you also fancy gigging at Fluid Bar contact them via their website here.
