So the last time we tried this, the heavens unleashed a tropical torrent that chased away bands and would-be attendees alike. What's going to happen this time - a plague of frogs?!?!?! [rimshot and hold for laughter to die down].
Anyhoo, the deal is still the same: it's a Saturday night, we're playing with great bands, and be sure to tell the door you're there to see Even Man Out in order to receive the super-top-secret discount (the cover will only be $2). Please come, everyone. It's just like the last scheduled show minus the weather.
We are no longer playing the Grape Street pub with good friends The Gut Strings, but fear not -- we'll be teaming up again in the near future. Apparently, the mere suggestion that we might decline a cut of the cover or *gasp!* front the costs ourselves was enough to set the Local Music Venue gods into a rage, forever banishing us from their 10X10 Performance Temples.
Also, we have no web presence and no one ever comes to our shows, so take that, loyal friends and fans.
As the slew of shows we booked at the beginning of this year taught us, cover charges keep anyone and everyone from coming to see you play. We're working to change this - at least for our own shows.
Sometimes we get 100% of the door, but most of the time, we get a small percentage divvied up amongst whomever is on the bill. The rest goes to covering the venue's cost - usually the sound guy. That's totally cool, but it also means that almost none of these venues have a built-in crowd or walk-ins, and it's impossible to build or expand upon a local audience based on playing live.
We've decided to work on making all of our shows free, whether this means working out no cover with the venue ahead of time (like this last Friday) or fronting the bar's costs and passing the savings on to anyone who feels like seeing live music but not paying $5-$10 for the privilege of deciding whether they like what's on offer for the night.
Hopefully, we're successful, and the times anyone has to shell out money to see us will be few and far between!
