David Layton - Guitarist / Blog

Falling Star

My latest piece is a cheery little number about a man who feels that life and love have passed him by and decides to lie on the beach and wait for the sea to take him where it will. Hope you enjoy it. Not in the least autobiographical I can assure you!

Help Me Get There!

Hello everyone. My aim at present is to place one of my songs with a major artist and reap huge financial rewards, so, if you have any contacts, please use them for my advancement. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Chimera - Brothers In Arms

You just have to hear the version of Brothers In Arms (Dire Straits) by Chimera. It's epic: better than the original!

Goodbye Gary!

As a tribute to my favourite guitarist, Gary Moore, I offer my version of Gary's hit, Don't Believe A Word. Gary, you were the best and we'll miss ya!

Bones Martyn Band - Check 'Em Out

Many thanks to Bones Martyn for his staunch support and for laying down a bass line on a new version of Floating Bridge (to be uploaded when space permits). He's a credit to the spirit of ReverbNation (and his band sound like a groovier version of Motorhead!). Thanks mate!

Recording & Such

Everything you hear on this site of mine was recorded in my bedroom, alone, using a BOSS Micro BR recorder and its integral modelling software and condenser microphone. No external amps, effects or other devices were used. I think the BOSS is a great little machine, and it has allowed me single-handedly to inflict my music on the world. You lucky people, you!

Warrior Nation
Warrior Nation  (about 4 years ago)

I used a Boss br-1180 for several years. Great little machine. I've since moved to Logic. Regardless, I've always recorded my Les Paul direct, as you do. Yet I've always suspected that I could get a more "authentic" tone by putting a Shure 57 in front of a real tube amp. You sir have blown that notion out of the water! Your guitar tone is stellar; it is nuanced, full bodied, articulate, and warm; in short, nothing like what a digitally processed guitar is normally thought to sound like. I read long ago that the real tone of a guitar comes from the players hands (I think EVH said that). Man, you've got some magic hands!

Covers and collaborations

I loved the Henry Mancini-penned theme tune from the Inspector Clouseau film, A Shot In The Dark with Peter Sellers (Shadows of Paris), but always thought Gary Moore should have done it. As Gary is no longer with us, I’ve had a shot at it myself (if you’ll forgive the pun). I suppose you could call it a pastiche of Gary’s style. I’ve altered it a bit too. Hope you like it!
