#CHERNOBYL In dedication: to the disaster I created a series of multi-media drawings, watercolors, and other works, which I titled "Cherub-Nil".. These were included in my solo show, "Narcissus" which was held at, and sponsored by The Ethical Culture Society, on Prospect Park West, Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC.
This was an expression of my own constant anti-nuclear energy position, and my support of solar energy, wind-energy, ocean energy, and all other safely available natural forces.
Bassist Avishai Cohen: youtube.com/watch?v=H-ZYxftpsak I'm very impressed seeing what Avishai has accomplished. At age 21 he played in my trio, in NYC, while studying here, getting his career started. We gigged at Birdland, Village Gate, Filli Ponte, 5&10, The WBAI Crafts Fair in a building at Columbia U., an Israeli nightclub in lower Brooklyn, and places I can't recall. We were interviewed on WBAI fm radio. Avishai's earliest recorded composition (to my knowledge) is on my first demo. I had invited the guys to each record an original on my demo, to use it as their demo as well. (I wasn't paying them much, so this made it tastier, and beneficial to all!) A composition by extraordinary pianist Jason Lindner, is on it too. Avishai hadn't named his piece, so I called it it 'Blues Up', and he liked the name. In my promotion materials I called him, at age 21 "the bass players' bassist". Maybe I'm psychic. _________________________________________________________ When I get past the transmutation of that tape to my computer, I'll play some of the songs here. __________________________________________________________________________ The duo pieces on this profile have Ted Trimble on bass, another excellent player, now deceased. Many of you have commented on his genius, especially on 'Poor Butterfly' and "I Fall in Love Too Easily', and I'm glad that he's getting that appreciation, although he's no longer here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekkFCPo0lAE Sonny Rollins on Monk, his mentor
Zelda Williams, his daughter, quoted French poet Antoine De Saint-Exupery "You - you alone will have the stars as no one else has them ... In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night ... You - only you - will have stars that can laugh." ~~~~~adding "I love you. I miss you. I'll try to keep looking up."
Monk said: "I don’t consider myself a musician who has achieved perfection and can’t develop any further. But I compose my pieces with a formula that I created myself. Take a musician like John Coltrane. He is a perfect musician, who can give expression to all the possibilities of his instrument. But he seems to have difficulty expressing original ideas on it. That is why he keeps looking for ideas in exotic places. At least I don’t have that problem, because, like I say, I find my inspiration in myself."
That comment from Christine McHoes: "Billie's magic is Back !" made my day! No, my year! Listen to her, a voice as sweet as Billie's
