A Book Unbound

Clive Barker said "I dreamed a book unbound," and that began one of the most intricate and moving pieces of writing that I've ever read.

I do that with music, I think. I wake up, and there are snatches of melody coursing through my head. I spend hours trying to place it - do I have a Van Morrison song stuck in my head, is this the keyboard line to some crappy pop song I heard in a restaurant, what? - before I realize that it's my subconscious trying to write music. It has to force everything through the bloated filter of my conscious mind, where I consistently and foolishly second-guess and end up writing songs that, I suspect, aren't as good as they were in my subconscious.

Does anyone else feel this way? I was just wondering.
