What’s the meaning of your album name? Teoria Hibridia signifies the hybrid theory through which we live our lives, including the collage of musical styles, cultures, and musicians with whom we collaborate. By recognizing & understanding our commonalities we can respect our differences and accentuate our diversity.

Describe your nominated work: A fresh take, we hope, on Latin music. We attempt to honor the DNA of Latin music in general, coupled with current cultural, social, and political realities. Teoria Hibrida was/is a cross-border collaboration that speaks to global realities within an inclusive musical landscape.

Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMA’s? We were excited to find a group, IMA, interested in non-traditional approaches to musical creation. The fact that IMA recognizes independent, talented and community-oriented musicians around the globe is a gift to all of us that catalyzes even further our potentialities.

Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording? Absolutely! We used traditional, handmade string instruments from Mexico, such as requinto jarocho and jarana in combination with cuban percussion. We also added bata drums, donkey jaws and toy keyboards.
