Why Would Neil Young Trademark A Hawaiian Word?

I'm not a huge Neil Young fan but I respect the guy and understand his cache. I even like his politics most of the time. So why is it that Neil Young feels to need to continue the Colonialist tendencies of our white predecessors and take something from the Hawaiians for his own personal gain.
