The Mark 2013

The NJC's next full-length album already has a working title - "The Mark." A handfull of new songs yet to be recorded for this record were included in our setlist back in spring during the "Left Behind on the Road" Western Canadian tour. AMong them - the title track (which we've opened every 2012 show with), "Champagne Ivy," "Into the Fire" and the plodding carnival acid trip instrumental "Marionette"

In addition to the upcoming full length, you can also look forward to that which we've threatened to do for several years - the acoustic ep! The NJC has performed acoustically several times at intimate performances since 2008, and it's high time we captured it for all to hear. If you really can't wait, you can get a small taste if you attend the premier screening of "The Hunt for Butterflies" in Saskatoon on Nov 10 (University Arts building, Room 241 theatre, 7:00pm). The film's soundtrack features an acoustic instrumental NJC song interpretation as well as more music from the shady fellow who composes the Angry Teeth Freakshow's backing tracks. Reception and party to follow at Louis Pub on campus!

new video projects! new band member! new full-length album!

In the aftermath of promoting "Left Behind" with a brief but wild Western Canadian jaunt, we figured it would be fitting to let everyone know what's going on while the NJC takes a break from the stage until later this year.

First - several video projects are finished, near finished or in planning stages. An official promo video for MY SMILE featuring a collage of live footage culled from our 2012 tour as well as a couple concerts 2010/2011 is complete, watch for it online in the next little while!

Also - Calgary's RunRabbit Entertainment will be using the NJC in an upcoming music video that will also promote a short film to be completed this fall/winter. Anyone familiar with this photo/video production group will know that the outcome of this project will be something visually assaulting - colourful, provocative, disturbing and sexy all at once.

And for those of you who enjoy watching the NJC do ridiculous things OFFSTAGE - Missile Puppy Productions has put the finishing touches on the first brief episode of CANADIAN GOTHIC ROCK KITCHEN. Watch for it online! This was shot alongside our full-length episode of "Brutally Delicious" for iFood.tv, which you can watch online here:

And finally - we are extremely PROUD to anounce the addition THE RAGE to the New Jacobin Club membership. He performed his first 4 shows on stage with the NJC and Mistress Nagini in May. Formerly of GHOSTS OF STAR CITY, his mortal alter-ego is a well known music educator in our hometown. He brings back our sorely missed blazing leads and guitar harmonies. THE FURY bade us farewell in early 2011 to free up more time for his own group BEFORE & APACE as well as a complex roster of other projects.

The RAGE has already been a significant contributor to the songwriting process and overall sound of the band as we work on new material for the next upcoming full-length album. Expect to hear as many as 6 new songs live this fall!

RoTT 'N RoLL!!!

It's all about the music?

You hear that all the time from serious musicians - "It's all about the music"

That's sort of tragic.

Those who subscribe to that philosophy often accuse artists like us of distracting our audience away from the music.

But here's our truth -

We care about the music. We care about musicianship. We care about the story it tells. We care about how it is visually presented on stage. We care about the lighting and costumes and characters. We care about performance art. We care about engaging and involving the audience. We care about the artwork on our album covers, posters, and t-shirts.

We are musicians, yes, but more importantly we are artists and performers. As we work on new songs and a new concept and storyline, we now more than ever are not losing sight of this fact. It's NOT just "all about the music," or it wouldn't be fit for the New Jacobin Club to share with you.

Mobilizing the NJC army

This group thrives on chaos and pressure. It's no secret that over a dozen band members have come and gone over the years, a glance through the photo galleries at newjacobinclub.com shows a pretty colourful cast from the past. It is a taxing venture and it hasn't always moved in harmony with the lives of the musicians involved.

As we assemble a new show with a new line up and tour dates for May 2012, the familiar shadow of chaos and uncertainty looms over everything. It has always been a monumental task to get this ensemble prepared for concert dates and a new stage show, and this time around is no different. Getting 7-10 people to synchronize their schedules, priorities and come together in artistic union to do what the NJC does is like rousing an army to fight at dawn after an overlong break from the bloodshed.

But now the time for bloodshed once again draws near...

"Left Behind" - 15 years in the making

And so it finally is coming to pass...the 15th anniversary recording project that was completed in the summer of 2011 will see the light of day (or, if you prefer, the darkness of your dungeons...) in May 2012.

This is a fairly significant piece of work, despite it being only a handful of new recordings. Why is that? Well, for starters it contains 2 songs first performed live at the VERY FIRST NJC show in 1996. Has the band changed since then? Absolutely. Do these older songs still sound relevant today? You be the judge. "My Smile" was not only performed live in 1996 but also appeared on the NJC's first cassette demo ep ("Pacifists are Suckers") recorded in late 1995. As for the remainder of the ep, you'll just have to wait till May to find out what else will be on it.

It's been a long journey from 3 piece band in 1995 to the incredible ensemble of eccentrics you see today. Take a listen to "My Smile" and leave some feedback...either here or on our facebook page... we will periodically reward it with free digital copies of the upcoming ep!
