I was talking with a friend from high school the other day and it reminded me of a good memory. When I was a kid my first instrument was the drums which conjures up lots of good old memories but I digress. The thing is my parents sure must have had some guts allowing me to have drums as an instrument. Turns out though , my mom was a big fan of the drums. She used to go see Gene Crupa and his band play when my folks lived in DC while my dad was finishing his stint in the Navy during WWII. Here's the thing. During my drumming years my dad was often on swing shifts at the plant where he worked and , well I'd forget sometimes. I'd come home from school , head for my room , which was across the hall from my folks room , and I'd put on the headphones , grab my sticks and start jamming along to the Who or ELP and have a blast and then... then the door to my room would open up and there would be my dad standing there in his PJs just staring at me. 'Oh No! He worked the midnight shift last night and I'm a dead man / kid' , I'd think to myself. But he'd just give me a stink eye grin , turn and walk down the hall to get some coffee and a cigarette. We all think our folks are tough on us as kids , but truth is , my folks were saints to put up with all my crap back then. Thanks for this life Mom & Dad. I love you.
