Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?

Okay, I borrowed the title from George Jones. I 've been involved in the Country Music industry a long time, so I don't think George will mind. But as I listen to the direction Country Music is going these days, I wonder who will preserve our musical heritage for our grandchildren, Many of the traditional Country icons I grew up have left us; Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Billy Walker, Ernie Ashworth, Hank Locklin, Patsy Cline, the list goes on and on. Most "Country" radio stations now feed us a steady diet of what sounds more like 70's Rock. Any of us who still do bar gigs where there are any young customers have to play a certain amount of this stuff, because that is the only Country some of the new generation has ever heard on the radio. The good news is that through the Internet a real Country fan can still hear some honest-to-goodness Country Music, including many good indie artists you won't hear on the major market stations. Here are a few sites for those who don't already know where to find them. CIHS-FM is a 250-watt station in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. An Internet search will take you to a website where they can be heard all over the world. PalTalk has many chatroom stations where one can hear whatever genre of music desired around the clock. Once you have downloaded PalTalk, the instructions for navigating the site are very easy to follow. Another station called DooWopCove, which is mostly old R&R, plays Country on Sundays and Tuesdays. Jerry Mac’s station, Country Music Planet, is also a great stop for anyone wanting to catch a glimpse of our musical history. Jerry himself is an artist, and has known many other artists personally, and has some interesting stories to tell, along with a show full of great music. Just go to Ixquick or any other search engine, and you should have no trouble finding any of these sites. Happy surfing!
