What music is all about...

Music has always been my life. I write songs about my life, and my friends’ lives, and sometimes I just write cause I feel like it, because it’s what I was born to do. But the show at 12th and Porter really made me realize exactly WHY I do what I do.

Yes, I had the time of my life, doing what I love for my friends, family, and Nashville’s music industry people. It was truly a life-changing experience. But with the rush of being on stage aside, the real reason for the life change happened a few hours after I finished my set.

I ran into an old friend named Adley, and she shared with me a story that totally blew my mind. I wrote a song called Left My Heart With You that I had played at the showcase. It is a song about a person who passed away trying to comfort his/her loved ones. I never imagined that this song would have as much of an impact as it did that night. Adley told me that there was a man standing next to her at the showcase, and as I was singing my song, he started crying. This man cried so hard he had to leave the room completely. When he came back, he told Adley that he had just lost a dear friend a couple days ago, and he said to her, “I really needed that song.” MY song. The song I wrote simply because I thought it had a good hook.

I couldn’t believe what I heard. That night, I realized exactly why I sing and write. It’s not to become the next country music superstar. That is just a perk that God may or may not have in the cards for me. I sing and write simply because I want to touch people’s hearts. Help them cope. Give them HOPE. Glorify God and the gifts He has given me with every note and every lyric. THAT is true success. The story that Adley told me helped me realize that I am doing everything I hoped I would.

I wish I could meet this man and thank him for helping me to realize exactly why I do this. Whoever you are, God bless you. Thank you. And I am truly sorry to hear abut your friend. You are in my prayers. And to all the other musicians out there, so what if you aren’t as famous as Carrie Underwood or Keith Urban. So what if you aren’t a millionaire. God gave you the gift of music to glorify HIM, and to heal others. Use it. Don’t ever underestimate the power of music. And don’t ever give up.
