New songs to share - & Happy 4th of July!

It has been a while since my last post. It is now July and I am super pleased to share that Kip and I have written 10 new songs with 2 more in process. The music is beautiful, cinematic, sexy, and trippy. I am so excited to share it with all of you!! My past experience was to put together an album of songs, go into pre-production with the band (basically practice the tunes), then hop to the studio and record, mix the whole album, then master it (do some mixing tweaks and overall EQ), and then release it when everything was complete. But this time has been different from the start.

First of all, I went into the studio having written zero songs. To be perfectly honest, I had been struggling to get back to my songwriting after having my daughter, Kalea, 6 years ago. Motherhood has been such a beautiful creative and fun experience, yet it can be so physically and emotionally challenging! And I was finding it difficult to reconnect or even find the time for music. So after failing for years to write much of anything that I liked I decided this winter that I needed a collaborator. I knew that I really liked working with my bass player Kip Kuepper but we were having a hard time fitting in our sessions with busy lives. So I called his studio, Coupe Studios in Boulder and booked the time for once a week for about 4 hours each session with the goal of trying to write one song per session. I think we have met a total of 10-12 times and that is how many songs we have written. Voila!

We decided to just go with it for a while, write songs, enjoy the process, and narrow in on this new sound we are pursuing, which is a lovely blend of European lounge, trip hop, electronica, and jazz remix. I have been listening to this style of music for years and hoped someday I would incorporate it into my own music but didn't quite know where to begin. Kip has been such a music inspiration throughout this project. He is - a Multi instrumentalist, a pro tools master, a limitless well of creative ideas, and is just an all around stellar human being that I I love to spend time with. What fun to be in the studio, even just a couple of times a month, just for the fun of it. No specific goal in sight except to be creative and write songs. Ahhh, life is good!

But as we go through this process goals are surfacing and musical desires are percolating, like the desire to share these songs with my friends and family and the desire to get back on stage sometime and honor the performer in me.

Instead of waiting for an album release I have decided to release a song every couple/few weeks for a bit. We just keep writing and there is no end in sight so we might as well share this with you as we go along. Are you with me? Seems to be the craze these days. Right?! In the era of singles I wonder if people ever listen to full albums anyway? Kids these days! ^_^

Big hugs and see you soon, I hope!
