What is Trying and Trying and Trying?

Writer Gethan Dick spent time with six different bio-medical scientists – whose specialisms ranged from developing mathematical algorithms to predict how sexual selection affects evolution to the cell cycle in the eyes of zebra-fish to using light to diagnose cancer. After spending time with the scientists, Gethan wrote six pieces – truthful but poetic explorations of their research. She then took the writing to six musicians – again, a broad spectrum, from squelchy electro-pop to modern classical via beatbox and folk – and worked with them to record the six pieces as spoken word to music. As well as Gethan’s words, the science and the scientist’s fed directly into each piece of music – whether through swapping of A and D notes in a song about genetic codes, or six electric guitars copying an optical frequency graph through their noise levels, engineering noise multiplications to mimic evolutionary mathematics or swapping A and D notes in a song about genetic codes. All six tracks are very different.
