My Guitar

I have 5 guitars, all for different purposes. I love them all, and each one of them gets the attention they deserve. There is one though, that gets a little more love then the rest. She's curvy, she's strong, she's green and she screams at all the right moments. Due to her headstock, she's often mistaken for a Fender. Fender would kill to have her, but she's all mine.

About 10 years ago while teaching guitar in Westerly, Rhode Island (famed former home of Guild Guitars), I was playing my old beat up and very loved Stratocaster that my mother bought for me when I was 10 years old. My employer was master luthier Zach Dustin, who's line of Zachenstein guitars were sold at the shop. His guitars play just beautifully. Always in tune, and always singing. He had taught me a bit about guitar repair and construction, and I was intrigued about building an axe. After months and months of thinking about it, I decided to go ahead and give it a go. Zach helped me out with a design and advised me on the materials that would work the best for the instrument.

Luckily, the lumber yard where I went to buy the wood(conveniently owned by a student of mine) had a former Guild employee manning the wood shop. He would put pieces aside that would make beautiful guitars. He pulled out a gorgeous piece of mahogony, 15 inches wide and I was sold. My sister was able to borrow some tools, and without knowing a thing about woodworking, I got to it. First hollowing out the sound chambers, then shaping the body. And that, is where my participation ended. I in no way had the understanding and skills to finish the project, let alone the last step of attaching the maple top. I handed over the odd-looking piece of wood to Zach, and waited in overly excited anticipation for my new baby. I had no idea that it would've come out so beautiful. From the finish right down to the setup, he got it perfect. So perfect in fact, that I was actually a bit intimidated by it. She and I are now great friends and lovers. I can't remember what its like to not play her, not hold her and not hear her sing. I've gone through a lot of guitars over the years, and not a one can hold up to her standards. I'll always love and play that old strat of mine, but my Zachenstein is my life mate. She gets me.
