The Annual Yellow Room Gang Concert and CD Release Event!
Michigan’s premier songwriting collective, The Yellow Room Gang, (www.yellowroomgang.com) will present their yearly concert at The Ark in Ann Arbor on Friday, January14th. (www.theark.org, $15, 8 PM) This year the gang will also celebrate the release of their third CD entitled “Live At Big Sky”.
This highly anticipated CD was recorded over two nights last August at Ann Arbor’s Big Sky studio in front of a live audience. The idea was to give fans the unique opportunity to join the gang in the recording studio and witness how a record is made. They further enhanced that experience by combining the legendary performances of the gang with the feeling of being at one of their monthly meetings. Those meetings, which have been going on since December 2004 in the yellow living room of fellow Gang member, David Tamulevich, consist of a pot luck and song critique session of the newest songs the members are working on.
To that end, each YRG member prepared a dish for the 40 or so people who attended and Jackson-based Sandhill Crane Winery donated a selection of their wines. Both nights sold out with people coming in from as far away as New York and Connecticut. The spark, immediacy, and exuberance of the performances is abundantly apparent on this new disc, which features 2 songs by each member of the gang; some classic material from their repertoire and some never recorded before - including brand new songs by Jan Krist and David Tamulevich which made their debuts at these sessions.
The Yellow Room Gang consists of 8 of the most accomplished singer/songwriters in Michigan, all of whom are also well known and respected on the national scene. They are David Barrett, Jim Bizer, Annie Capps, Kitty Donohoe, Michael Hough, Jan Krist, David Tamulevich and Matt Watroba. Their first two recordings were widely praised and continue to receive extensive national radio play. A typical Yellow Room Gang concert finds audiences singing along with their old favorites, enjoying the debut of new songs and gaining a bit of insight into the creative process. The smart, witty banter emanating from a place of respect and love between old friends, who also happen to be master craftsmen, make for a must see event and yearly celebration for many.
