“Irvine is an internationally known bassist. His style is characterized by its strong funky grooves, great sound and boisterous solos. With his bass he wants to give in the first place the band a strong foundation. Irvine is influenced by funk, rock, soul, blues, jazz and gospel. Warwick Bassist Andy Irvine does on his second solo album "Diggin' That Funky Blues" literally what the title describes. He brings in his own personal style, ten songs with lots spun melodic bass solos. Irvine proves with this album that a bass player should not be in the second row on the podium. What we hear here is the work of a top musician - bassist.”
Eric Schuurmans - rootstime.be
“The title of the album covers the musical load. The listener is presented with an exciting cocktail of funk, blues and soul with, among many guitars, a prominent role for winds. The songs seep influences of artists like James Brown and Sly Stone (Call Me Cornbread, Can not Slow Down), although for the blues lover (Them Nasty Blues, I Awoke From A Dream, One More Show) is also plenty to enjoy… In short, Diggin' That Funky Blues is a varied and surprisingly strong album that will hopefully be picked up by a large audience.”
Stan van der Lugt - bluesmagazine.nl
“Andy takes over on vocal duties for Call Me Cornbread. This track is a funky, rhythm and blues romp that would make even James Brown proud. The title track is a great, funky, blues song that will be sure to get your booty shaking to the beat. Andy takes a ferocious popping and slapping solo on the bass, showing his versatility and skill on the bass. Andy's ripping and aggressive solo playing proves that the bass can carry a solo just as well as a guitar can, especially when Andy's soloing! Great Job Andy!”
“As singer, songwriter, bassist, guitarist and producer, Irvine has done a splendid job on this disc. It’s an upbeat, uplifting, rock out record which positions Irvine as a potential bass equivalent of Joe Bonamassa. Let’s hope he manages to achieve the same level of commercial success.”
