Old Man Cactus Supporting Acts: Aaron & The Spell, Joanna Pacitti Old Man Cactus Old Man Cactus Band is a piano based sax infused alternative rock machine. Sound is similar to Dave Matthews, Ben Folds, the Decemberists, and Muse. The members of the band come from various backgrounds of music resulting in a new sound with a familiar feel. An eclectic experience that engages and entertains the energy of its environment. Old Man Cactus brings a showy rock pop mixed with a tiny splash of country, laced with soul rhythm and blues, and enough original 'next hit' music to fill an entire night. Mike Malloy & Pierce McKenna met at Cardinal O'Hara School & realized their musical compatibility, which developed into a lasting friendship that survived their departure to separate colleges (Mike to Neumann University, Pierce to the University of Hartford - Hartt School of Music). Over the summer of 2006, Mike & Pierce formed the initial version of Old Man Cactus with some friends; Mike on keys & lead vocals, Pierce on tenor/alto saxophones & backup vocals, Tom Gilronan on bass & backup vocals, Sean Sheehan on vocals & electric guitar, & Luke Devlin on drums. Over the next 2 years, the style & sound of the band began to change, leading to the departure of Sean Sheehan and thus beginning a search for the right drummer. After Luke Devlin moved on, other possibilities were explored, including Mike Panna & James Scott Britton. Through James, Rob Shaffer (a fellow University of Hartford alum, audio engineer, accomplished guitarist, & bassist) was reconnected with Pierce. Shortly thereafter, Rob recorded a live performance of Old Man Cactus at the Burlap & Bean in Newtown Square, PA. A few months later, Tom Gilronan (on bass) moved for a job opportunity, leaving an opening for Rob on the bass. Soon after, Frank Dancey took over for James Scott Briton on drums, and then the band began to fully develop their sound into the music you hear today. In the spring of 2010, Mike, Pierce, Rob, and Frank approached acclaimed producer Jared Kotler, former member and producer of Marcy Playground. Jared's agreement to work and play bass for Old Man Cactus not only proved an excellent opportunity for the band as a whole, but also for Rob to switch to guitar, his true calling. Today, Old Man Cactus spends their time split between the recording studio working on new material and playing shows whenever they can.
