Oceans of Insects / Press

“Ocean Of Insects have taken the musical template of post-metal and overlaid it with stoner vocals and solos. This might sound jarring but in fact they work it really well. You have heaviness with eerie atmospheric samples and drones but overlaid with distorted, psychedelic guitar outburts - what's not to like? All you need to know it that it rocks like a bastard and sometimes that is all I want. The complex song passages keep the attention levels nice and high while the tracks run together to make playing the album as a whole the only option. If you want something that kicks arse but want to rest your ears from the cut'n'paste cookie monster vocals that seem to have taken over the world, give this a listen. ”

“It’s hard to find true veterans of the music scene. Many musicians eventually move on from music and bands rarely stick together. Oceans of Insects is the closest thing our city has to a super band. Each member has been part of the music scene for years, bringing a wide range of influences to the bands overall sound. We met up with them after one of their shows to talk about recording their last album, band dynamics, and the changes they have witnesses in our music scene.”

“Pirate Toy Fund Thanks so much to Oceans of Insects and all the bands and fans that helped make this toy drive event a success! Your generosity will put a smile on a lot of Rochester-area children that need it most!”

“ METAL | Pirate Toy Fund Benefit by Roman Divezur click to enlarge choice_concert4-1.jpg Email Print Add to favorites Add to Custom List Comments It's not every day that you mix pirates with metal and not expect a plundered merchant ship or broken barstool. On Black Friday, Monty's Krown will host a benefit concert for the Pirate Toy Fund. The premise of this event is simple: your donation of one new store-bought toy gains you entrance to the show, and collected toys are distributed to needy children. The line-up features four bands: ambient/alternative rockers Oceans of Insects (pictured), brutal — meaning good — pyros Burn Everything, doom metal/stoner-rock trio Chillum, and extreme metal heads Bleed The Messiah. Toys are mandatory, pirate speak is optional. Pirate Toy Fund Benefit takes place Friday, November 23, 8 p.m. at Monty's Krown, 875 Monroe Ave. Admission is the donation of a toy. 271-7050. ”

“A thunderous clash where metal meets post metal would probably be more of a apt assessment of New York's Oceans Of Insects. They sort of straddle both genres for the best part. Keeping an upbeat typical metal dynamic while sneaking in a, for want of a better term, Hydra Head Records sort of sound. I cant quite put my finger on exactly what it is that makes them remind me of, say, early Cave In or Big Business but its there. Not so much in the vocal style but in the general make up of each song. But saying that, as the album progresses it takes on more and more unexpected elements and influences.”
