“A six-member band led by Michael Mitchell, a pianist and the musical director...provides terrific accompaniment.”
“The first-rate, six-piece band is onstage throughout, dexterously supporting but never overstepping the vocalist — not that such a feat would be easy or even possible. The musical director and pianist, Michael Mitchell, also delivers a standout performance, weaving long melodic runs around Ms. White’s powerhouse vocals and darting in and out of same with short, sharp licks.”
“Additionally, an integral part of the show was the fantastic 6 piece orchestra...Musical Director Michael Mitchell on Piano...”
“Backed by a stellar band, who played the shadows in her life... and Michael Mitchell tinkling the ivories.”
“The Tony Award-winning Lillias White has the chops to portray her (Big Maybelle), accompanied by a stellar band....”
“Her (Lillias White) brassy pop-soul and smoke-tinged blues, accompanied by Michael Mitchell’s playful band...”
"Michael Mitchell’s music direction keeps the spirit to the original cast recording. This said, what he does better then the recording and the Broadway version I’ve seen is give emphasis on musical phrases that enhance the action on stage. There are also some variations in tempos and instrumentations which improve upon the original. The unity of the orchestra with the performances on stage is seamless."
“Michael Mitchell’s musical direction is wonderful...”
"The four-piece touring orchestra (led by musical director Michael Mitchell) sound fab, and a lot bigger than they actually are..."
"No review of this show would be complete without mentioning...the two man band."
"Under music director Michael Mitchell’s guidance, the orchestra sounds as great as any touring rock band."
"With tight funk-rock strains played by the pit orchestra, the musical unfolded the familiar story without a stop in the action."
