Killian MacGeraghty / Press

“ A quick peek at the official website of San Francisco’s apparently infamous rock ‘n’ roll band, The Gun and Doll Show, reveals that they “have appeared before standing-room-only crowds since 1993” and that they’ve “built a devoted following” due, in part, to “an outrageous stage presence.” However, you’d never know it by hearing the recent solo release of their front man, Killian MacGeraghty, entitled "Celebration Songs."”

“The highlight here is a disarmingly simple, yet simply gorgeous, song entitled “Happy Birthday.” It’s lovingly presented in a repetitive suite featuring four different languages – English (American and British), Spanish, French, and Japanese. Well, okay, five languages, if you count the pair of English dialects. Anyway, it’s a catchy little number, and while you’re not likely to use it at your next birthday gathering to replace that other blow-out-the-candles ditty, you might just catch yourself muttering it under your breath in the shower. I recommend MacGeraghty sell the rights for the song to the highest-bidding greeting card company. It’s just the right tune for one of those audible birthday cards.”

“This subdued, yet slightly ambitious, thematic work shows little sign of anything even remotely outrageous. Instead, it’s seems to strive for the antithesis of this by merely… um…celebrating the simple things in life. Its style immediately reminded me of Stephen Merritt’s 1999 effort with the Magnetic Fields, entitled 69 Love Songs – it’s hooky and playful, yet tender; and often more wistful, in fact, than celebratory. Yet each song looks at a unique aspect of a quiet, normal life that MacGeraghty obviously feels is laudable – ranging from topics as diverse as holidays (well, duh!), to amorousness, to pet-sitting.”
