Since their debut in the spring of 2009, SWEET ALIBI has been captivating audiences with their alluring blend of soulful melody and folk/roots tradition. Playful sense of lyricism set to powerful vocal harmony set the stage for a performance which is up front and personal and instinctively compelling. Drawing influence from a vast array of musical references, Sweet Alibi apply a quirky pop sensibility to an eclectic set. Songs range in mood from hauntingly provocative ballads to left of centre takes on everything from Country to old school RnB. Backing their vocals with electric guitars, banjos, hand percussion, ukuleles, upright bass, kazoos and whatever else they can get their hands on, Sweet Alibi compliment a diverse set with an equally eclectic instrumentation. Comprised of three core members (Jessica Rae Ayre, Amber Neilsen, and Michelle Anderson), and backed by an array of Winnipeg’s finest musicians, the group performs steadily both as a stripped down trio and with a fully fleshed out rhythm section. The band has shared the stage with many of Manitoba’s folk/roots community and have performed everywhere from intimate coffee houses and mainstay clubs to outdoor concert series and festivals (including an appearance at The Winnipeg Folk Festival). Having finished their highly anticipated debut album with Juno award winner Mitch Dorge, Sweet Alibi are currently touring their album across Canada. Keep your ears open for when Sweet Alibi is nearest to you, you don’t want to miss this band! KAYLA HOWRAN sings country music, not by virtue of a Wrangler shirt, but a childhood in Peterborough spent fishing and wrestling dogs. Her songwriting is equal parts original and idiomatic, a fresh but faithful interpretation of the genre and proof that classic country doesn’t have to be old, but it does have to be timeless. After moving to Toronto, Kayla found a foothold in the country and rockabilly roots of the Queen Street music scene. She and her band, The Fellas, began playing at The Cameron House in September 2010, and quickly established one of the hottest weekly residences on Queen Street. Every Friday night Kayla’s powerful vocals fill the bar as she and The Fellas spur on a dance floor full of patrons with bourbon-soaked two-steps, meandering tales of love lost, and everything in between. Kayla has a rare ability to lean on her influences without imitating them, which lends a genuine quality to her music that is often absent from many of her country contemporaries. She sings with the conviction of someone who has lived every bit of joy, agony, and heartbreak contained within her songs. However, it is Kayla’s voice that truly sets her apart. Powerful enough to rise above the din of a packed hall, yet with a softness that evokes the tender emotions of transfixed onlookers, Kayla controls the mood of the room with the skill of a baton-wielding maestro.
