Queens Jazz OverGround meets Brooklyn Jazz Underground in one of the crown jewels of jazz clubs in the inner borough!
Queens-based trumpeter and composer Josh Deutsch brings his latest project, Pannonia, to The Queens Kickshaw. Pannonia combines elements of the traditional and explorative, to create a unique sound. With the unusual frontline instrumentation of trumpet, trombone (Brian Drye) and violin (Zach Brock), Pannonia draws from the classical chamber music forms and textures of Bartok and Stravinsky, the improvised spontaneity of jazz and blues, and the rhythmic intrigue and melodic singability of folk music from ar ound the world. Ronen Itzik adds driving percussion ranging from cajon to dumbek, and Gary Wang plays dual roles, both holding down plucked ostinato lines, and adding an additional lyrical voice with the bow. Whether romping through a Balkan-inspired blues, burning through a song about bees or playing a lyrical ballad about dirigibles, Pannonia maintains its instantly recognizable and infectious vibe. “...the balanced instrumental dynamic between Soffiato and trumpeter Josh Deutsch rings clear and true. The aural direction taken leans toward tracks with a hearty, linear progression - a traditional approach to structure, tempered by a heavy dose of soulful impulse.”
