“Don’t be fooled by the slide guitar or the blues-club opening. Or be taken in by Smith’s nasally Liam Gallagher-like voice. Or the foot-tapping rhythms or the deceptive simplicity of the music overall. This is more than just a mere booty-shaker or a Jeff Healey clone. Much more. Lyrically as stout and straightforward as anything by Jack White (“I’ve witnessed a man wasting his life/I’ve seen him search for things to deny . . . The man lives inside of me”)—but without the self-conscious strain that White as writer seems to have to force out of himself at times. Smith doesn’t even seem to know how much punch his lyrics have or how intuitively he moves through chords and notes. It sounds like something that could’ve come out of the sawdusty floors of clubs in Stockton or Little Rock or South Amboy. This is fun but more than fun; it has grit. It has something ineffable and new about it that’s hard to pigeonhole—and pigeonholing is what music, and the world, needs less”
