What started as just an interest in drama some years ago has ended in a very promising musical career for Ruth Tiriboyi or The Jiti Queen, as she is known by his adoring fans in Zimbabwe. She became one of the few local female musicians to enter the male-dominated industry in 1995 in Zimbabwe.
“I would start singing from nowhere while on stage during our drama tours of schools and community halls in 1988, in Zimbabwe,”recalls 'The Jiti Queen'. That show marked the beginning of a musical carrier for Ruth. Discouraged by the lack of of opportunities in drama she decided to turn to music.
The following years witnessed the promising Jiti Queen on a nomadic career that saw her working with other unknown musicians trying to break onto the local music scene. The struggle to establish herself has not been an easy one, she says, it took a deep sense of determination. She almost gave up but finally managed to record her deput album as an independent artist in 1995 and 1997 in South Africa as in Zimbabwe most recording companies told her that, "Women in music are not recognized,” at that time. She has held various live shows in and outside Harare and the response was overwhelming.
I went to Middlesex University to study Mental Health Nursing and this has never stopped me from composing and signing as music is my passion”, said The Jiti Queen.
The Jiti Queen was born in Murehwa, Zimbabwe and she is currently lives in United Kingdom.
The Jiti Queen's sound, a blend of traditional Southern African genres and modern sub-genres of Afropop, including Jiti, Traditional, Gospel and Dance music. She is a songwriter and a singer. 'My music can very easily be used to educate and engage students of all ages about tradition music and history,' says The Jiti Queen. The Jiti Queen plays hard core Jiti music which is meant for those who know how to make use of the dance floor but at the same time, the seriousness of the lyrics on some of the tracks forces you to listen attentively and before you take note, you find yourself absorbed.
Preparing to Release her first Album and ...........
The Jiti Queen is looking forward to hit the road, honing her live shows with a band. 'My aim is to travel around the world and being on the road is something I've always wanted. So when you see posters around make a date, you will never be disappointed. I swear.”
