“Cleckheaton Folk Festival celebrated its coming of age and it was hard to see how it could possibly get better. Yet the 19th festival showed it is now marching boldy into adulthood and there are no signs of stopping it. As ever, the Friday night curtain raiser at the town hall was the perfect start to the weekend’s festivities. The concert featured four of the finest acts around, setting the scene for the rest of the festival. First on were the Ian Gartside Band, veteran folkies whose set slipped effortlessly between humour, tragedy, melancholia and social comment. Their passion is songs which are gutsy, have a bite and which leave you with something to ponder over. Their harmonies were rich and their musicianship impeccable both as individuals and as a group. From the opening number they engaged the audience and so the bar was set, not only for the rest of the evening, but for the rest of the weekend..........”
