"...The characters in G.W.’s songs struggle, and these struggles are inescapable. In one song, he sings simply of a couple trying to sell their car, and we hear a description of a car no one would want to buy; but we also hear all the plans that hinge on this sale and seem unlikely even if the car is sold successfully; and we hear of the son who drove the car before he went to war, but we hear so little of him that we begin to draw conclusions about what’s happened to him and why the car is being sold. In another, a couple allows themselves a few occasional, private moments to share with each other their hopes; underlying the exchange, though, is instead hopelessness, a sense that what passes for hopes in lives like these are pipe dreams sure to go unrealized. The one thing that seems to keep all of these characters going is their ability not to believe what’s there to be seen right before them..."
