Prong Witchburn Nemesis Separation Of Sanity Guillotine Friday, August 31, 2012 Hawthorne Theatre 503-233-7100 1507 SE 39th Ave, Portland, OR (MapQuest) 7:30pm (doors open at 7pm). All Ages. $13.00 advance tix from Cascade Tickets. $15.00 at the door. ABOUT PRONG-- What becomes an iconoclast the most? Carved Into Stone sums up what Prong stands for. This is an album slaked in hostility, personal detachment and seething with the urban paranoia that's long been the mark of this sonic triad. It's eleven tracks that don't merely settle into the New York City-born band's cannon of material that has yielded post-metal classics including Beg To Differ and Cleansing. It exceeds it. "I hate nostalgia," says mainstay, vocalist and guitarist Tommy Victor whose musical and personal outlook belies his current Los Angeles environs. "But this record literally has every strand of Prong's DNA spliced together in a way that feels more exciting than it has in some time." Produced and mixed by Steve Evetts (Dillinger Escape Plan, Suicide Silence), Carved Into Stone picks up where Prong's classic albums left off. Opener "Eternal Heat" sets things off at a blistering pace fueled by drummer Alexei Rodriguez and bassist Tony Campos' formidable rhythm section. Meanwhile, the likes of "Revenge...Best Served Cold" is absolute, classic Prong: a huge riff slaked with bitter sentiments. Tommy Victor admits that Carved Into Stone is the first time Prong has taken direction from a producer in the studio. "It's also the hardest I've ever worked on a record," he says of working with Evetts. "I'm happier with the way it came out more than almost anything I've ever done but there were points during it I wanted to kill myself and everyone around me." Prong emerged from the New York City underground of the late 80's, quickly setting themselves apart from the conformist culture of the city's hardcore and metal scenes. They were recognized internationally for their first two independent releases: Primitive Origins and Force Fed. When Prong's dalliance with the outer limits of the mainstream acceptance came via Epic Records, it proved more successful than the underground-bred trio ever expected. The band's "Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck" from Cleansing became Prong's calling card. "It felt like the world had finally caught up with us," says Tommy. Prong's influence was being felt in the scene around them. Bands from the likes of Pantera to White Zombie to Korn were taking notice of Prong's purposeful, creative riffing and making that the template for platinum selling success. "I wasn't jealous," Tommy recalls. "But I could take a royalty check or two." At the beginning of the 2000's, Tommy put Prong aside for a time to play with Danzig and Ministry. It was a much-needed time for Victor to refocus his energies. When Prong finally twisted itself back into form, they toured exhaustively both headlining and supporting the likes of Soulfly and Fear Factory. Slowly but surely, the songs and ideas that would become Carved Into Stone began to take form. "The songs I was writing felt more like Prong than anything I had written since Raven was in the band," says Tommy, recalling the era when the recently deceased ex-Killing Joke bassist Paul Raven was one of his co-conspirators. Prong's Long Branch Records/SPV debut Carved Into Stone isn't merely another chapter in the band's many-storied career or the much clichéd "return to form". It's the sound of Tommy Victor and Company stating exactly who Prong is. Like it or not, they aren't about to go away any time soon. ABOUT WITCHBURN-- Heavy, down-tuned, southern fried, whiskey soaked sabbra cadabra. Their live show pulsates with seething and sultry, sweaty energy. Bringing as much groove as brutal thunder, the music is like a hammer straight to your soul, crashing down through the sky... only you welcome its impact the moment they tear into their first song. Spilling their guts on every stage they play; they've opened for Slipknot, Helmet, Crowbar, Saint Vitus, Blue Cheer, Mudvayne, Fu Manchu, 3 Inches of Blood, Trouble, Zeke, Pentagram and Valient Thorr to name a few. Featuring the vocals of Jamie Nova, also well known for her role as lead vocalist in the all female AC/DC tribute band Hell's Belles, and the monster riffs of Mischa Kianne on guitar and occasionally violin along with the low end madness of Jacy Peckham on bass and the bone-crushing heaviness of Dana Sims on drums, Witchburn is the sound of rebellion in the voice of a hate-child conceived during a mythical orgy between Black Sabbath, Janis Joplin, Ronnie James Dio and Heart. More About Witchburn Witchburn delivers passionate, moody southern metal, made even more powerful by the band's fierce energy and considerable musical chops. The smoky grooves are deep and heavy, tapping into a classic rock vein with gritty guitar lines, seamlessly blending vintage rock influence with that of modern metal. Their ready-for-battle anthems, apocalyptic overtones and dirty, doom-laden riffs keep your ears glued while confirming that these are dedicated musicians with genuine love for all that is heavy. Singer Jamie Nova is also well known for her former role as lead vocalist in the all female AC/DC tribute band Hell's Belles, in which she portrayed Bon Scott and Brian Johnson with her surprisingly expressive vocal range. Seeing what else this band is capable of becomes even more attractive when the black-dreadlocked guitarist trades her Les Paul for a violin on a song or two. Their monster riffs, powerful vocals and kick ass, shout-along choruses completely galvanize even the most skeptical listeners, sending them promptly into blissful abandon as they surrender to pumping their fists in the air. Pouring their whole hearts into their own bluesy brand of sultry Sabbath sludge, Witchburn commands you to throw your metal horns up high! This is how we slay our demons... some people call it an exorcism, we call it a Witchburn. It's not about religion, nor is it anti-religious, anti-pagan or anti-wiccan. It's a figure of speech, our analogy for hunting down those things that have haunted us over the years, facing ghosts from the past and conquering personal demons. The witch-burning that took place during the great witch-panics or what is also known as 'the burning times' is a prime example of ignorance run amok and how those consumed by such blindness and narrow-mindedness often prejudge - and more often than not, misjudge - in so many ways. Driven by fear, they persecute that which they do not understand - and if they don't understand you, they want to burn you, accuse you, blame you, frame you, arrest you, suspend you, ban you, expel you, convict you, and imprison you. Our music is the fire that empowers us to stand up for who we are and what we believe. We invite you to stand up and be counted - whoever you are, whatever you believe. Whether you're a 16th century witch accused of malevolent Satanism, a peaceful pagan, a Christian hiding in a cave from the Romans during the 1st century, a Jew being lead to the gas chamber in Nazi Germany, a musician slandered by allegations that their music contains messages meant to promote violence, murder and suicide or just a misfit kid growing up in small town America with a heavy metal T-shirt on... you know what it feels like to be judged by someone who doesn't understand you, and to be persecuted for who you are and what you believe. We've been on trial our whole lives and now, with our whole hearts and our metal horns up high, we will be purified in the flames that surround us, allowing the smoke from our own burning times to finally disperse... Welcome to our Witchburn. ABOUT NEMESIS-- Nemesis has only been a band for a few short months, (6-7). But from the first time they all stepped in to that rehearsal studio and started crafting and writing, they knew they were on to something special. From Hanks War drumming, Willies gutteral bass tones, Ryans tireless rythm's, Joe's blistering Leads and Christians Violent and crushing Vocals, theres no denying the sheer intensity that will undoubtably come out of these guys in the future! They want to earn your fandom one crushing pit at a time! ABOUT SEPARATION OF SANITY-- Established in 2007, Separation Of Sanity is becoming known as one of Portland, Oregon's hardest acts to follow onstage. A mix of metal, aggro, progressive, thrash, and anything else they decide to throw into the mix, S.O.S. prides itself on its live performances and high standards of musicianship. Most of its members are active in a wide range of other projects of various genres (from salsa to funk, from jazz to hip-hop), but their love of "roots" metal creates a dynamic sound without losing any of the brutality. Separation Of Sanity has shared the stage with acts like The Accused, Proven, Ditch Digger, Droplaw and Endless Rage on the local front, as well as numerous other acts over the years. An S.O.S. show is a great time and the band has yet to hear anything but praise for their draw and their performance. After dropping The Decimation E.P., the music has taken flight with various spotlights on podcasts such as "The Mothpod," " The Midnight Spookshow," And Scott Siglers "Friday Fix." The song, PANDEMIC has become the intro for Scott Siglers podcast "Tuesday Terror". Also, the song, "GRINDER" has become the theme song for the podcast "The Astral Audio Experience." The E.P. is also on rotation on Kosher Metal's internet radio station and made its compilation entitled: The Kosher Kompilation Vol.2 with the songs: Greed and Grinder. They also did very well in its Battle of the bands. The E.P. also has a strong presence on Fubar's social networking site with 3 victories in the Battle of the bands for the song GREED. The song PANDEMIC has just been added and released on The Metal Networks: Deck The Halls With Denim And Leather compilation. 2010 has been a good but hard year due to S.O.S. Guitarist Kieth Fitzgerald having a near death accident, but Kieth stayed strong and made an impressive recovery to get back in the mix and kill it on stage once again. After rebuilding and strengthening their sound, their sets and their focus, they are looking for 2012 to be the year to get after it. S.O.S. is already booked in a variety of venues for the upcoming year and their shows just keep getting larger as Separation Of Sanity's fan base continues to grow exponentially! For any band that wants to share the stage or any of their fans that wanna step to the pit, they have only one thing to say... WATCH YOUR ASS.
