THE GRIFTERS with J Fernandez Art of Live FestivalThe Grifters are one of the top rock n roll bands of the 1990s. They blew out of Memphis in 1990emanating from the 3 piece noise-rock trio called A Band Called Bud into several dozen tours-de-force from the Pyramid Club in Memphis all the way to the tip-top of Groningen Europe with stops in every bar along the way in the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, & Germany. No band toured more or rocked harder than the Grifters. No band equaled their level of recorded output while destroying their crowds one show at a time, vis a vie the Shops of Ann Adler tour van. They toured with the best of the best: Flaming Lips, Fugazi, Pavement, Guided by Voices, Jeff Buckley, Red Red Meat, & even the legendary Simple Ones!Shangri-la Projects was lucky enough to sign them up for a flexi-disc, several singles, 2 award-winning genre-busting full-length albums, & two beautiful eps. In the mid-90s, a bidding war broke out by every major indie, faux indie, & major label for the Grifters services. The winner was Seattle-based grudge rock label Sub Pop, whose owners were busy building yurts in the woods, mishandled the band at every step of the way. (Thanks, Bruce!) The Grifters records stand the testament of time.

Protomartyr - Spider Bags - VARSITY - Turn To Crime In a city full of brilliant people with dead-end jobs and dampened by bitter-cold winters, playing music offers a cheap outlet. Protomartyrs taut, austere rock was incubated in a freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed, feebly, by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not to waste time. Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but relatable, hooky but off-kilter.Theres a temptation to call it garage rock, but that doesnt quite fit. With respect to the local predecessors, this isnt the primitive stomp of The Dirtbombs or The Stooges greasy roar. Punk works, kind of, even if it leaves the hardcore kids confused. Post-punk suggests something too retro; indie rock, something too precious. What Protomartyr is, is stuck between the cracks. If thats the case, though, they arent alone. Protomartyrs economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like Pere Ubu or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek (whose frontman Kevin Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr). Singer Joe Caseys dry declarative snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson the opportunity to explore textures and reinforce the rhythm section. In other words, to fuck around a little bit more.
