“Although EL Robo itself is a relatively new band, its members are longtime friends and veterans of the Riverside music scene. Drummer Phil Small, singer and guitarist Ryan Moore and turntablist Mando Davis have been playing together for years. “This is the third different band we’ve been in together,” Small said. The trio performed together in Decibel Project and Barstow and added longtime friend Demetri Wyman on the bass. EL Robo has been gaining steam and will play in Big Bear Lake on Saturday, April 6, for X103.9 FM’s X Day on Bear Mountain. “Most of our songs are about skateboarding, surfing, stuff we liked as kids,” Moore said. The band’s name even comes from stealing 1980s skateboard graphics, Moore said. EL Robo’s sound has changed from the band’s inception. “We were playing a lot of dub and reggae,” Small said. But the members were burned out on what was going on in the scene. “It’s hard to stake your claim in that style,” Small said.”
