“Other purveyors of the hip-hop scene include: Morse Code and Drunken Immortals. Among these acts there’s a DJ still wicky-wicky-wacking in the Phoenix area, DJ Mantis Claw, or as I affectionately referred to him, Jimmy. Jimmy opened up my eyes to the world of turntablism. Mind you this was pre-Youtube, sh*t, it was pre-Google! So to have a scholar of the wheels of steel right in my own neighborhood was a fantastic happenstance. My first electroacoustic experience with turntables was during the legendary Wicka Wicka Wednesdays hosted by Morse Code. The instrumentation: 3 turntablists and 2 MCs (Morse Code) Wurlitzer Electric Piano 200A (me) Upright Bass (Kellen Southerland) Guitar (Tyler Miller) Mantis Claw became my first call for anything DJ-related. Jimmy was (and still is, I presume) a curator of fantastic music. He introduced me to oodles of rare B-sides, and the milky groove of Weather Report’s Black Market. ”
