Sunday funday with the XXXperience
"Stand Up Largemouth Bass" Just a brief note... saw the Chris Story XXXperience yesterday at the Press Room. Very cool outlaw rock-a-billy sort of thing. Two people making a lot of sound. The stand up bass player was borderline mind-blowing. Everyone was in awe of this kid. It's amazing how when done correctly, the stand up bass provides an additional dimension of percussion that really adds to the sound. Like a dude was playing drumsticks off a snare rim, but wasn't, it was the bass! Think the cool percussive groove in I Want Candy, but all hot-rodded up. I had first my experience with this while playing at the annual Fall Down at the Elston Farm in Poulsbo, WA. A guy got up to play stand up with me, and next thing I know we were rocking a slap-back groove that I was really digging. ...and the XXXperience covered and put their own spin on the Hank Williams Senor classic Kaw-Liga, which makes them OK in my book. Not to mention Link Wray's Rumble.
