Chooka Parker / Press

"In the fall of 2013, Parker released his latest recording, an EP entitled, My Jewel. The three-song EP features nearly half an hour of beautifully composed music that is both soothing and stirring. The lead single and title track, “My Jewel” from the EP opens with calm, twinkling piano notes, sounding like wind chimes on a nice, breezy afternoon before gathering in tempo and intensity like the threat of a storm. As the thirteen-minute-long song unfolds, the music ebbs and flows between passionate, nuanced introspection and cathartic release without spiraling out of control. Parker plays his music from the soul and bolsters it with a sense of urgency, as he has said that the overarching goal for his music is to inspire and heal those that have been wounded. To some, this might seem like a mighty ambitious claim from someone so young – Parker has yet to reach his 20’s - but with “My Jewel”, he proves to be more than up to the task. The future is bright for Chooka Park

“Chooka, Thank you for the kind reply. In reality, what I meant was that your variations are--in several respects--better than Ludwig van Beethoven's original. Your expressive use of the lower register in left hand; and your masterful improvisations on the melody in right hand (with glissando after glissando, no less) is something that Beethoven could not have envisioned. Aside from double the length, your improvisation is substantially more complex in its harmonies and richer in content. A genuine treat. -- Bob Johnson, Richwood, West Virginia, USA..”

“A great article on a great talent-personality! Loved everything about Chooka, he’s such a refreshing musical discovery! Even if it isn’t our discovery, we think it is. We instantly make a personal connection. Chooka is just like his disarming lyrical and creative music, spontaneous and miraculous. Great press that he comes from a farm where there was no TV, and that he was inspired as a child by the story of Mozart on the back of a cd. But this would be hype if his music were not as good as it is. It’s mesmerizing to watch his super flexible and stylized pianist hands speed along the keyboard. A man of many talents, I can see that he’s as flexible doing splits and would probably win in our DWTS! Plus, he writes poetry, wants to be an actor, he’s like a child in a candy store for the arts! Most importantly, he follows his own muse. Make he keep on that creative path forever. Chookas!”

“Chooka Parker is a 19 year old musician from Red Lion, Victoria, Australia. Growing up in the beautifully scenic farm land, away from electronics and the diversions of the day, Chooka found time between his homeschool studies and working on the farm to express his creative side by teaching himself piano at the age of 14. And so a prodigy was discovered. Having a penchant for improvising his amazing piano masterpieces in the moment during the time of performing, his talent is beyond what most of us would ever dream possible. After being urged by friends to audition for Australia’s Got Talent (to which he had no idea what the program was since he didn’t watch or own a television), Chooka went on to perform and become a finalist on the program in 2011 at age 16. His talent amazed the judges and brought him admiration and fans across the globe. Since his appearance on the program, Chooka has recorded a CD titled No Worries! as well as a just released EP titled My Jewel *cont. in ”

“That's his greatest triumph. He takes beautiful, classic tunes and plays them with some kind of rock-improvisational jazz passion. It's like he channels universally moving melodies through a modern lens. On the piano to boot, the loveliest of instruments.”

“In our time, we are here and fortunate to witness the talent that will equal or surpass those who stand the test of time, counted among those artful masters of their craft...take your place among them Chooka! Your gift brings us joy.”

“Chooka Parker releases EP My Jewel”

“Probably the only pianist that uses the whole piano. AMAZING PIECE!”

“ I listened to Keith Jarrett improv now he is one fantastic pianist but Chooka has more energy in his music. Jarrett is good but he seems to hear the notes Chooka seems hear the orchestra. ”

“Festival that puts Anglesea on Musical Map”

“ I was lucky enough to interview the amazing and very talented Chooka Parker over the phone! At the time, 17-year-old Victorian country boy auditioned for the 5th season of Australia’s Got Talent, showing his talents on the keyboard. To then make it all the way to the semi finals! Check out Chooka’s official website: www.chookaparkermusic.com ”

“The sounds of strings, keys, skins and songs replaced the noise of lawn mowers and birds that would have had the stage on any other Sunday. While the event kept clear of labelling headliners, keyboard prodigy Chooka Parker was a big drawcard after becoming famous on Australia's Got Talent in 2011. The 18-year-old from Maryborough stunned the audience with his complex compositions and fleeting key changes while sweating away in his now famous Driza-Bone coat.”

“Chooka Parker and his amazing piano skills on Australia's Got Talent have made him a worldwide hit. The Victorian farm boy was home-schooled on a farm at Red Lion, near Maryborough and taught himself to play the piano. Chooka is known for his original compositions, which he makes up on the spot purely as he feels the emotions of the time. “FANS of Australia's Got Talent's Chooka Parker headed to the Edenhope Show at the weekend to see the shearer and piano prodigy in action. Chooka performed at the two-day event on Saturday morning. Treasurer Sandra Clutterbuck said Chooka was a highlight of the show, which ended yesterday. "He was pretty good - very good, actually,'' she said. "We're going to try and get him back next year. "He interacted with the crowd at all age levels. He talked and entertained.''”

“Maggie said one of the highlights of the festival was the Venetian Carnival on Friday night which attracted 1500-2000 people who packed the hillside along Memorial Park and listened intently to the spectacular performance of special guest, piano-playing sensation Chooka Parker. "During his time here, Chooka fell in love with Grafton and it was wonderful he could be a part of the festival this year," Maggie said. "It was lovely to have had good weather on Friday so the Venetian Carnival could be held on the riverbank which is where it is traditionally performed and loved.”

“Classical pianist Chooka Parker proved a hit with footballers yesterday. The 17-year-old Red Lion performer showcased his talents at Eaglehawk Football Club’s major fundraiser. Parker attracted cheers from the crowd as he performed a mix of spontaneous tunes and songs that are on his debut album, No Worries. After two 20-minute sets, the teen jumped from the stage and performed a running front flip in his boots and leather jacket before posing for photos with attendees. Parker appeared on Channel Seven’s Australia’s Got Talent earlier this year.”
