The Stern Grove kids camp with Chelle and Friends! was just perfect. I loved it, my kid loved it, everybody else and their kids loved it. And I can say Chelle and Friends! loved it too, I saw it. I saw their faces- they enjoyed being with the kids. They were so cool. Through all 3 days there was not a dull moment. Singing, dancing, art projects-we (and I mean “we”- the adults too) had so much fun together. Kids learned new songs at the day one. (I did too, but successfully forgot the words at the end of the day. They were in Swahili, after all. I did manage to memorize them by the end of the camp, and now they invaded my head for quite some time.) They learned the dance moves, they played the percussion things,- there were so many of these, that I don’t remember all of them. Mr. Camilo taught the kids to play them well enough to perform at the end of the camp. He also played the guitar and the trumpet the next 2 days. But that’s not all. Mrs. Rhonda on the keyboard and Mrs. Donna on the sax (who expected that?)- kids had the whole band to sing and dance with at the day of the performance. And live instruments to see and touch. The props they did with Mrs. Donna were really cool. I couldn’t stay away and made some too. Her art cart was like a mini Michael’s store. There was glue, paint, glitter, feathers, pom-poms, and what not. I left with sequins on my butt and my son with glitter on his face. We didn’t mind. Mrs. Rhonda was so much fun, dancing, singing and playing musical games with kids. And Mrs. Michelle was just omnipresent. “What are you guys doing?” The kids would sing, or say the lines, and she would go” Great, super, beautiful, couldn’t be better. I can’t hear you.” Honestly, what the kids did would be fine with me, but apparently not with Michelle. She wanted more, better, brighter; more expressive, more intense. And she got it. All the times. She has her ways, and in these 3 days I learned something from her. I am a music teacher, and I wish I’ve met Michelle before! How often does it happen, when you are teaching and you want to improve something in a students’ performance, but as soon as you start, you just see kids to get bored and tune out. My own 6yo is the master of that -yes, I teach him myself, I am that crazy. After seeing Michelle doing her magic with the kids, I think I know now how to deal with that. I’ll try. I’ve been teaching for many years, but I was so impressed, that I came home and started to tell my husband, a high tech guy who can’t sing a tune, how funny, right to the point and, the most important, effective Michelle’s remarks were. And I never talk to him about my work or music at all. That is the sign of me being impressed. Really impressed. Michelle, Rhonda, Donna, Camilo- thanks for spending these 3 wonderful days with us, sharing your passion, make the kids and adults open and have fun. And teaching me some things as well. You guys are beautiful and young at heart. I love you. Anna K

Hey Chelle, I want to let you know what a fine time we all had checkin' out your show at La Pena last night. As a part-time New Orleans resident (I spend about 1/3 of the year down there and 2/3 in Oakland), and a long-time New Orleans music enthusiast (I've written a book, any number of magazine articles, and I had a long-running show on KPFA a couple of decades ago) I thought I was on top of all important manifestations of New Orleans funk in the Bay Area, but clearly I was wrong about that since I had never known about you before last night. I was really impressed with your set list; a great mix of popular tunes and NOLA obscurities. Anyway, thanks again for a down-home funky time. Best live music I've heard in months. Michael – “Friend”
