Brazos The Rat / Press

“Two O.G.’s of local indie label Finch House Records — Fancy Rat frontman Brian Yoder and The Equines/Cats in the Basement drummer Michael Murphy — also have a side project under the name Brazos the Rat. Operating in a minimalist manner, Murphy ditches his familiar full kit setup for an assortment of interesting percussive methods, while Yoder strays from his usual acoustic rig with rearranged original ditties al la ukulele and electric guitar, often layered by way of a Boomerang III loop pedal. A hearty heaping of vocal harmonies also help to thicken the sound.”

“The project utilizes a three-track loop pedal, but Yoder does not store samples or pre-recorded loops in advance of the show. Instead, everything is sonically assembled completely live, which Yoder admits can be tough and lead to a few mistakes. “I feel that this approach is much more rewarding to the audience,” he said. “You get a truly organic, and thus sometimes very imperfect, spectacle to behold.””
