Black Market III / Press

“After having a smashing success with The Mississippi Mudsharks in the 90’s, then again in the mid 2000’s, Scottie Blinn has learned the lessons of the road from his own experience as well as from the the experiences of those he’s had the privilege to work with, and has formulated his own solution to a successful band. He calls it Black Market III. Black Market III is a Rock & Roll business, with sponsors and merchandise carrying a trio of musicians through tours throughout the United States as well as Europe. Who is Black Market III? Are they a blues band or rock band, or metal band? How did they get to this level of success?”

“Winning international critical and commercial success with the Mississippi Mudsharks beginning in San Diego in the early 90’s, Scottie Blinn shared stages with Billy (ZZ Top) Gibbons, Willie Nelson, George (P Funk) Clinton, Dick Dale, Buddy Guy and many visiting Blues stars before the band called it a day in 2009.  Determined to return to the road, he and Roxy Coverdale founded Black Market III, a band reflecting those influences, with metal and grease punk alchemy.  At the tail end of their 4 month European tour through Germany, Belgium, Holland, and England, Catalyst’s Cecil “C Lue” Disharoon caught up with them.”

“One of the most exciting live bands at this moment is without a doubt ‘Black Market III’. It's around 3 years since we first saw them in action. We still remember vividly, the power they brought to the stage and we predicted a bright future for this band. Without surprise their debut album 'Songs That Shake The Cage' confirmed our beliefs. In the mean time they are becoming a well established band in the 'Low Lands' [Belgium and Holland] music circuit. We've seen them again recently, and frontman Scottie Blinn remains the master of his guitar. His infectious riffs and emotive solos are highly impressive. The effervescent and accomplished bass guitar player, Roxanne Coverdale (Scott's ‘confidante’) and the quite spectacular drummer , Gavin Glenn, complete this trio... “Black Market III increased the atmosphere with frontman Scottie 'Mad Dog' Blinn at the helm, a previous, frequent visitor to Belgium and Europe with 'The Mississippi Musharks', and the ambiance was assured. That band went their separate ways in 2009 but this 'new' trio managed to stimulate the crowd with their mix of course sounding blues, garage rock, rock and roll, roots and slow blues. Their single minded approach and style where well savoured by the crowd. 'If I Can Hold' , 'Comin' At Ya' and 'After Dark’ all got a passionate edge from these rebel punks transformed to blues with an attitude. The energetic Scottie Blinn on guitar and vocals had a nice raspy voice and Roxy Coverdale changed this set up with some very nice songs...a pleasing changeover./// As a live act this band should be nominated for their original, power driven and passionate approach and not only for best Rock/Blues album 2012 and 2013 with 'Songs That Shake The Cage' and 'Black Roses'. “Street Life Fest, Leverkusen, Germany (Von Frank Weiffen, Kölner Stadt-Unzeiger) Aug, 2014 Backstage, singer and guitarist Scottie Blinn says, "we came here to get out of the heat, and now it's damn hot! " And Blinn must really know. Black Market III of San Diego takes the stage with their bone-dry, wonderfully crunchy Blues and Rock. The trio playing the stage directly in front of the Topos Club had one of the best performances of the open airs. Simultaneously Riddimculcha was on stage around the corner playing Reggae and Dancehall, and the stuffed under a scarf Jamaica Rasta hairstyle from singer Ben Robby completed the sun party.”

“In the mid-1990s, no one ruled the San Diego electric Blues scene like the Mississippi Mudsharks. They won SDMA’s Best Blues Band in ‘95, ’96, and ’97. They opened for Willie Nelson, Buddy Guy, George Clinton, Dick Dale, and almost every big name blues band that rolled through San Diego. They cut two #1-selling CDs on the CrossCut blues charts in Europe. They held weekly court at some of the hippest clubs up and down the county’s coast, and were joined on stage by the likes of Brian Setzer and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. They built a solid following in Europe and the southwestern U.S. Twenty years later, Blinn has found new life and passion with Black Market III. BMIII, in its two year history, has received two SDMA nominations (Best Blues Band and Best Rock Album), is releasing their second CD, Black Roses, and is getting ready to tour Europe, which marks Blinn’s 13th trip to the continent.”

“Black Market III is one of the hardest working, hardest rocking bands in San Diego. You can usually catch their high energy, blues-drenched, leave-nothing-behind live show multiple times a week up and down the coast. But come fall, you’re going to need a passport to catch up with this 3-piece rock ‘n’ roll band.”

““‘Black Roses’ is a song about defending yourself from bad vibes and evil that bombards us every day,” says Scottie Blinn of the title track for Black Market III’s upcoming full-length, which marks a progressive departure from their Mississippi vibe. “Though we are steeped in blues roots, we’re writing about topics and taking the spirit of this music into territory most blues bands won’t go. Whereas many feel the need to re-create and live in the past, we honor what the music is all about and keep it relevant, by drawing upon it to communicate, express emotions, perform, and tell the stories of today.” A hellbilly video for the song is cut to silent-movie footage from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu.”

“Indie Fertility: Five Local Bands to Listen To: Black Market III-- "Blinn re-invented himself years ago as a grease punk and put out some star-powered records that I reviewed for BluesWax and other national blues mags."”

“The Garage Sessions ultimately have a larger purpose. “We’re going to tie it in with a tour as a tool to accompany and promote our club dates.” Blinn says they have plans to organize gigs in fan garages across the country. “Like house concerts,” he says, “only greasier.””

“Thanks to BMIII for a GREAT show at STARLINE this past Saturday! You guys ROCKED IT! For everyone who hasn't been to a BLACK MARKET III show... A MUST SEE BAND! Ole' David Lee Rock says, "Black Market III is a mash up of Social D and James Cotton... with jus' a lil' pinch o' Motorhead 'tude!"”

“Black Market III (formerly Black Market Baby) is a new trio formed by guitarist Scottie ‘Mad Dog’ Blinn, bassist Roxy Coverdale and drummer Haley Allen, performing at Tio Leo’s on Dec. 16. Blinn is best known as frontman for blues-and-punk-influenced group The Mississippi Mudsharks, but Black Market III promises to kick things up a notch, with hard-rocking originals and an off-the-wall selection of covers ranging from Leadbelly to Tom Waits. The band is working on its first album, but Black Market III is a band you want to catch up-close-and-personal. • Black Market III performs at 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16 at Tio Leo’s, 5302 Napa St. 21 and up. ”

"Scottie Blinn is a long time San Diego favorite. An articulate and many faceted man with a lot on his plate: performer, songwriter, masterful musician, producer, engineer, teacher, artist, owner-operator of a recording studio, and a record label. Scottie is known for being the riveting guitar man for the popular Mississippi Mudsharks in the 90s, a band that gained much success touring and topping the Blues Charts in Europe. He has shared the stage with many notable performers over the years. His knowledge of American root music and his commitment to its preservation is evident in his starting and operating Double Barrel Records and creating The Rock Academy of San Diego a school and life training program for grade school kids." ~~Ken Lehnig/ 10/31/11/ Songwriter's Marketplace

"Scottie Blinn has a new band? No surprises there. The veteran axe-master has been steadily adding to his musical bag of tricks since the Mississippi Mudsharks redefined blues and roots rock for a generation of blues lovers. No, the surprise in Black Market III (formerly Black Market Baby) is the trio's rhythm section: Roxanne Coverdale steps out on bass guitar and back-up/lead vocal and Haley Allen provides a no-nonsense bottom end on drums. The two are relative newcomers, but they played like juke joint veterans during their first official gig. This is the band to watch in 2012."--Dave Good, San Diego Reader
