Axel Weiss / Press

“'a+c+out', the new album by Axel Weiss and Cheryl Pyle is a story not to be believed in. You only start to believe-in on the second, or third time of listening to it. It starts with a dreamy promise of 'new spheres'. Then we get an invitation to a Moon Dance, done 'in time' and with unrestrained emotion. The guitar and flute are like two entwined happy snakes. They do all these cosmic motions right in front of our ears and third eyes. Axel has his tiger-rock-riff moments, while Cheryl keeps a consistent fusion rave agenda. 'Peace, Dignity, Justice - Freedom' is the manifesto. Cheryl's voice is calmly reassuring... how beautiful. 'A+C+Out' invigorates the mood and then we are being sent into 'Nirvana'. Just when everyone expects a Happy End, a big chill arrives. The universe is a Kubrickian entity, which couldn't care less if we all stopped breathing... 'abstract on pluto' is a fitting final message to this wonderfully crafted piece of modern music.”

“Well, today we have another good one, a solo effort by Axel Weiss (aka Ax. W.), an album entitled Spheres, Solo (Intrinsic Records). Axel comes to the forefront in undiluted fashion, with his acoustic and electric guitars, a little whistling, some keys and digital percussion. It is music of a thoughtful sort, guitar-centered ruminations that run from acoustic chordal or neo-Brazilian picking and articulating to electric expressions that have both jazz and rock overtones. All of it has an original, Axelian feel to it. Axel is a true guitar artist and this album gives us a chance to appreciate his way about things, schooled, smart, detailed, driving or place-centered depending, but always interesting and creative. It is, if I might be so bold, a guitar tour de force in its own way, a great listen and a wide swath of guitar artistry that folks should hear! Thanks for making this music, Axel! Recommended!”

"The first section is like abstract expressionist art in musical form. Kind of like McLaughlin's Mahavishnu work but with an earthy undercurrent and a superb cabinet effect. Then that rootsy blues happens and everything just goes head-noddingly soulful. A loose-form super-collider of expressive tones and flourishes that strike right to the heart of the listener and leaves them swaying with a smile on their face. Just excellent. Brilliant and talented stuff."

"As I was sifting through the thousands upon thousands of artists on ReverbNation, this page caught my eye. Artist, painter, jazz guitarist: this could either be really cool or completely horrible. Gladly, this fell heavily into the cool side of the spectrum. Many other unfortunate forays into this genre of music seem at times to be nothing more than a series of notes randomly flung against the listener's eardrums to see what sticks. Weiss's music, on the other hand, feels like a living, breathing organism seeping through the speakers. Each piece has a deep sense of meaning and direction to it, and it's sensational to sit back and let it whirl around you and draw you in ..."
