One of the finest soul artists from East Africa, Atemi Oyungu began singing at the age of 10. She first made her mark in the music scene with the all-girl group, Intu but went solo in 2007. Atemi has also toured Africa and the rest of the world extensively. She has performed at festivals such at Sauti za Busara (Zanzibar), Umoja Flying Carpet Festival (Mozambique), Sawa Sawa festival (Kenya) and most recently at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC in 2014. She played a major role in Wainaina’s musical production, Mo Faya, that showed off Broadway in New York and in Basel in addition to being one of Kenya's most successful theater productions. Atemi has been also known as a successful TV host of an all-Africa TV show, Africa Rising.
The artist released her first single, “Happy”, in 2004; and in 2008 launched her debut album, “Hatimaye”, and released her 2nd album "Manzili' in 2013. Her 3rd album is expected later in 2015 and has already dropped a first single called 'Moyo'. She has collaborated with East African greats such as Delvin Mudigi (Sauti Sol), Eric Wainaina, Chris Adwar and Lady Jaydee to name a few and performed alongside international starts such as Omar Lye Fook, Hugh Masekela, Lira and Anthony Hamilton.
A mix of neo-soul and Afro-fusion, Atemi’s sound has been described as that of “Miriam Makeba meeting Jill Scott.”
