In a not-so-secret corner of SE Portland, there is a weathered old Barn where WhistlePunk! was born. Since 2009, the Barn has been a gathering place for local musicians to celebrate and collaborate Hootenanny-style once a month. It was here in the spring of 2010 that JOHN and KIP first met. A couple of Hamm's tallboys later, the seeds for the band had been sown.
KIP wrote his first song on the guitar at age 11, over 30 years later he’s still going. (the song? Oh it was called “Trixie”, in A. ) Growing up in SoCal in the late 70’s/ 80’s where garage bands were king, he honed his guitar and bass skills playing in more than a handful of rock, punk, cowpunk and surf bands. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s he played in various bar bands, the occasional west coast touring band, and did a fair amount of studio work in the Los Angeles area. 2003 brought Kip to Portland, OR and he’s not gonna leave anytime soon, Portland’s music scene is pretty much exactly what he’s been looking for. After playing Bass with Emily Herring & Henpecked for 2 years, he’s ready to get back behind the wheel writing, singing and playing guitar with WhistlePunk!.
JOHN began with violin lessons at age 4, and classical piano at age 7. By the time he was a teenager he bought a guitar, which has been his primary instrument ever since. He formed his first band ("Goulash")in his early 20's, and played around Chicago under a number of names. After taking a 10 year break from the music scene and moving to Portland, John has hit the ground running with a backlog of songs waiting to be unveiled. John also plays rhythm guitar and sings background for Portland's own Drunken Prayer.
CHAD Loves Jesus and America too. When not playing with WhistlePunK!, he pays his respects to his Master by playing with Portland's "Git Rights Gospel Revue" performing such hymns as "It Ain't Gay to Love Jesus"
BRIAN's musical background can best be described as: "Are you going to drink that?"
