BRAZZ is a word that combines Brazilian and Jazz. We perform the great American Standards with the newer standards of Brazil, from Gershwin to Jobim. We strive to find those gems that have not been played to death, but sound really fresh, even though they were written a while back.
CAROLE MIGUEL: A “whiskey-voiced” singer in love with the songs of both the great American and Brazilian songwriters. She is an Oakland, Calif., native where her dad was a bandleader in the early days of jazz. She was greatly influenced by him and by the songs and singers of that era. Carole has had casual gigs both in Hawaii, where she lived for many years, as well as in Seattle. She’s performed on a regular basis with two big bands, the Sound of Swing and the Jet City Jazz Band, otherwise known as the Boeing Band. Recently Carole was asked to sing at the Acton Jazz Cafe just outside Boston. The club was listed as one of Downbeat’s top 100 international jazz clubs. One part of her repertoire consists of American Songbook jazz standards, with an emphasis on more obscure tunes. The other part is Brazilian, particularly bossa nova songs from the Brazilian songbook, sung in Portuguese.

Then, for 5 years, it was life on the road playing in rock bands while touring the United States and Canada. Doug now lives in Seattle, WA where he continues to play all different styles of music: jazz, rock, country, blues, Christian pop and Brazilian. Brazz offers Doug the opportunity to do something he loves: Play jazz and Brazilian music with great musicians!
JOHN ROTH, bass, began his musical journey when his grandparents gave him a ukulele at the age of three. Studies in violin, piano, gitar, trumpet and tuba followed. In junior high, he developed a love for electric bass, then double bass. His BA in Jazz Studies (1980) from Western Washington University was earned under the guidance of Bill Cole, Scott Reeves, Cole Biasini and first-call Seattle bassist and current Cornish professor, Chuck Deardorf. John’s easy, adaptable approach reflects an eclectic background of work and styles ranging from straight-ahead jazz to salsa, ballroom big band to R&B, Americana to experimental projects. Brazz offers three of his favorite elements, a guitar trio, Brazilian/American jazz and sultry vocals at the forefront.
