Medicine Men began playing together as a duo in late 1990. By the summer of ’91, they
were playing taverns on the Lakeshore. For nearly twenty years, they have continually
entertained patrons at bars and night clubs across this wonderful state, from Mackinac
Island to Detroit. They also book private engagements.
Medicine Men are comprised of Justin Carr (vocals, percussion) and Ron Smolen (guitar,
Justin is a self-taught player with a blue collar work ethic. He received some vocal
training in high school, but for the most part has adopted a “you know when it’s right”
approach to singing. His ability to mimic the vocals of his favorite artists makes the duo
sound larger than life along with his tasty fills and keeping of the beat on the bongos,
congas and junior congas.
Ron is a self-taught instrumentalist with a broad understanding of music. “A Bass player
by trade”, Ron switched from the guitar to bass early in high school to accommodate the
need to fill an open position in the local band. This continued throughout his
undergraduate career as he played bass for the Ferris State University Jazz Ensemble.
The switch back to guitar came as the genesis of the idea of “Medicine Men” was born in
early days of 1991.
This two-man cover band has only gained momentum as documented by the longevity.
