Paula Harris / Bio

“If Etta James fronted the Tower of Power- and they were a funky Blues band”- THAT is how Paula Harris is best described. Paula delivers a whallop of steamy powerful vocals mixed with an impudent and flirty personality and a ready humor on stage. She also selects a wide array of music that showcases the full spectrum of Blues from the elegant Jazzy side to the funky hip shaking soulful side. There is a reason they are nominated for a Blues Music Award this year as "Best New Artist"! This is not another niche blues band- they do it all and put on a show in the same league with some of the biggest headliners around. Funny 12 bar blues and swing are just the tip of this musical iceberg. Paula and her band “The Beasts of Blues” featuring the “Big Ass Brass” horns have rapidly become one of the hottest tickets around- when they make one of their select appearances. Their signature sound is an exciting fusion of Blues, Funk and Soul with a healthy side of that famous “East Bay Grease” that made Tower of Power so legendary. They are redefining the “Blues” for a new generation. Paula and her band of truly world-class musicians have frequently been called “the most impressive thing to hit the blues scene in years”!

They blazed into the Blues Scene like a meteor. The won the Golden Gate Blues Society’s “Battle of the Bands”, The Monterey Blues Festival’s “Battle of the Bands” and, after receiving standing ovations at all levels of Competition- they scored a top three finish at the largest band competition of it’s kind in the world at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. They are also nominated for a 2013 Blues Music Award for "Best New Artist"

Paula's debut CD "Turning on the Naughty" was released June 29th, 2012 and is already garnering high praises from the fans and critics alike. The blistering horn arrangements are written and performed by Mic Gillette and Tom Politzer- both from The legendary "Tower of Power" horns. Tom Poole ( see below) rounds out the CD's smoking hot brass. It features 14 tracks (8 of which are original compositions) that showcase every facet of the blues genre delivered with passion and sass! This may be a blues cd- but it is RED- hot!

Paula's band, The Beasts of Blues, is comprised of Derrick "D'mar" Martin on drums. D'Mar is known for jumping completely over the drums into the audience where he will captivate them by playing any surface available. As a 16 year Veteran with Little Richard and with a finalist position at this years IBC on his own in the solo/duo category. D'mar is as much a showman as he is a terrific musician. Terry Hiatt is on guitar and is known throughout the Bay Area as a true "Guitar Players- Player" He is one of the most sought after session players in northern California. He is also the musical director for the band. Joey Fabian is on Bass- both upright and electric and is endorsed by Fender/SWR, Human Basses of Germany and Daring audio. Simon Russell plays the keys like George Duke or Herbie Hancock and sings like Teddy Pendergrass. He not only does much of the unique arrangements you hear in Paula's music, he also is featured in several numbers of his own original compositions during each show. They are called the Beasts of Blues because they are all "Monsters" on their instruments.

Paula's horn section, the Big Ass Brass- is also made up of some prolific players. Tom Poole on trumpet, served that capacity for Etta James herself during an 11 year stint which garnered them multiple Grammy nominations as well as a Win. He has also worked with the like of Tommy Castro, Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, Gregg Allman and many more. Mike RInta, on trombone, has also worked with his share of legends. Sly & the Family Stone, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Santana, Wayne Shorter, Elvin Bishop, Pharaoh Sanders, and Chuck Mangione are just a few. Mike also serves as the Brass Leader for Paula. Last but not least is a newcomer that is wowing fellow musicians and audiences alike, Tony Peebles. He has worked with Lenny WIlliams, Nnenna Freelon, And John Lee Hooker to name a few. He is also a highly sought session player.
