Niva Flor is an independent singer/songwriter currently based in Oakland, CA. Born to southern working class parents in the Jersey suburbs and into an extraordinary community of teachers, creatives, activists, lovers, dreamers, pragmatists, old souls, and survivors Niva learned at an early age the transformative power of music.
Niva received her BA in Music from Spelman College, and MA and Ph.D in Ethnomusicology from UCLA. Drawing on the influences of soul ancestors like Marvin Gaye, Syreeta Wright and Donny Hathaway her style infuses folk, gospel, jazz, Brazilian and world music.
From New York to LA to Brazil to the Bay, Niva continues to hone her skills as a soul underground artist having shared the stage with hip/hop, soul, and spoken wordist's Sarah Jones, Dead Prez, and Abstract Rude and Tribe Unique. She was a featured vocalist with the Afro-Brazilian group Amulherada in 2006 Carnaval, Brazil's largest street celebration, spanning six days and hosting approximately 2 million attendees.
"Eclectic, corky, funk-jazzy soul" is how Niva describes her sound. Fresh but affectionately familiar, Niva's soulful vocals calm, evoke, and challenge.
She hearts all things dark chocolate.
