"The true power of music is when it's stripped of its commercial ties and cross-marketing and simply becomes a raw cry from the soul....Matt is proof"
LLOYD SPIEGEL: One of Oz’s leading blues guitarists
'Hollerin' Matt Southon is a blues player from the far south coast of New South Wales. Having settled in the small country town of Wyndham after many years in the Illawarra, Matt has been concentrating on his ‘Australian Verandah Blues’. A unique kind of music - inspired by the passion and fire of old style bluesman like Son House, Charlie Patton & Leadbelly- it's the kind of thing one might have seen in a 'juke' joint of the 20's....if they had been located in Australia instead.
His distinctive style is reflected in his instruments, with guitars crafted from old corrugated iron and cigar boxes, and a demeanor and voice that reveal an indisputable realness, its a stripped back, but energetic show that always connects with the audiences.
Having spent most of 2011 on the road, playing well over 120 shows and travelling the entire continent, Matt's been gaining a reputation as a top line blues performer, with a string of high profile festival performances including the Australian Blues Festival(NSW), Bridgetown (WA), Woodford Folk Festival(QLD), Darwin(NT) and the Great Southern Blues Festival (NSW) all highlights in a busy 18 months.
Matt has two solo CD's, Hollerin' (from 2008) and Australian Verandah Blues (2010) already released through Pirate Records, with another in the works. He is also apart of 'Two Rivers Blues' a duo with percussionist/drummer Matt Elliott and have just completed a live studio release, 'Headwater' for more duo info - www.reverbnation.com/tworiversblues
