Zaire was founded by 3 high school friends (Mike DiCenso, Jim Leahey and Matt Pisani). They play acoustic music with an emphasis on strong, tight 3-part harmonies.
Zaire's first paying job was at the Ground Round in Greenbrook, NJ in December of 1981. After years of playing at parties, the band started playing regularly in bars/restaurants in 1988. In 1992 Jim Leahey left the band to pursue other musical options and Brian Artuso took Jim's place. In 1994 Zaire added a drummer - Chris DelVecchio - to the mix, Mike added bass, and the band went electric with some songs while sticking to its acoustic roots for others. In 1996 Zaire disbanded.
In early 2009 the 3 original members of Zaire started playing again at local bars/restaurants. Now Zaire can be found playing in western Jersey and the Lehigh Valley area. Zaire plays as a 3-piece acoustic band and also as a 4-piece with a drummer, Jed Hoban of Williams Township, PA.
